Philodendron verrucosum ‘Incensi’ is a rare and exquisite tropical climbing species native to the rainforests of Ecuador, prized for its velvety, heart-shaped leaves and dramatic vein contrast. A member of the Araceae family, this exceptional variety is a collector’s dream — embodying everything that makes Philodendron verrucosum so captivating, with an added intensity of colour and texture that makes ‘Incensi’ stand out among its relatives.

The leaves are large, softly velvety, and richly coloured — deep emerald to bronze-green with bright, electric lime or golden veins. The undersides are equally mesmerising, often flushed with red or burgundy tones that contrast beautifully with the dark upper surfaces. The petioles are covered in characteristic fuzzy, bristled hairs (verrucose texture), giving the plant its name and a tactile, jungle-like appeal.

Elegant and dramatic, Philodendron verrucosum ‘Incensi’ thrives in warm, humid environments, rewarding the attentive grower with breathtaking foliage that feels alive with movement and colour.

Philodendron verrucosum ‘Incensi’ – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Filtered or dappled light best replicates its natural rainforest habitat. Too much direct sunlight may scorch the leaves, while too little can dull the vibrancy of its colour and slow growth.

Watering

Keep the soil lightly moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry, and ensure excellent drainage. This variety prefers consistency — avoid both overwatering and prolonged dryness. Reduce watering slightly in winter.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers warmth, 20–28°C. Avoid cold draughts and temperatures below 16°C.

  • Humidity: Requires high humidity (70–90%) to maintain velvety leaves and prevent crisping. Use a humidifier or keep in a greenhouse cabinet or terrarium for optimal results.

Soil and Potting

Use a loose, chunky, and well-draining aroid mix — peat-free compost combined with orchid bark, perlite, sphagnum moss, and coco coir works well. This mimics the plant’s natural epiphytic environment. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh nutrients and provide space for healthy root growth.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Avoid over-fertilising, as it can damage roots and discolour the foliage.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove any yellow or damaged leaves at the base to maintain a tidy appearance. Wipe the large leaves gently with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and reveal their natural sheen. Provide a moss pole or coir totem to support its climbing growth and encourage larger, more mature leaves.

Growth and Maturity

A moderate to fast-growing climber, reaching 1–2 metres indoors with proper care. As the plant matures, the leaves become larger, more velvety, and deeply veined, developing that signature luxurious rainforest aesthetic.

Common Issues

  • Brown leaf edges: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.

  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Dull colouration: Insufficient light or nutrient deficiency.

  • Pests: Occasionally thrips, mealybugs, or spider mites — inspect regularly and maintain humidity to deter infestations.

Background and Benefits

Philodendron verrucosum originates from the cloud forests of Ecuador, where it grows as an epiphyte, climbing trees in humid, shaded environments. The ‘Incensi’ variety is especially prized for its intensified colouration, velvety texture, and red-tinged leaf undersides.

This plant has achieved near-legendary status among collectors due to its dramatic foliage, tactile stems, and exotic beauty. It thrives best in conditions that replicate its native jungle environment — warmth, moisture, and filtered light.

Like all Philodendrons, it’s also known for its air-purifying qualities, helping improve indoor air while transforming living spaces into lush, tropical sanctuaries.

Quick Care Summary

🌿 Styling Tip:
Display Philodendron verrucosum ‘Incensi’ in a bright, humid environment — such as a terrarium or near a north-facing window — to highlight its velvety texture and vivid veins. Pair with other high-humidity aroids like Anthurium crystallinum or Philodendron ‘Paraiso Verde’ for a true collector’s display.

Beloved But Beware Microplastic Chip-Offs
Color: Bacon
My doodle adores this thing and gnaws on it constantly. He has not been able to harm it, which is great. That’s the best part. Things to be aware of: 1. This is mostly molded plastic; it is a bit heavy and very hard. My dog tosses it into the air and if it lands on him, it HURTS. A lot. 2. While it’s sturdy, sharp teeth eventually gnaw pieces and little shavings off the toy. These are microplastics and could be harmful if your dog swallows them.

Skye's Absolute Favorite Ball! 🐾
Size: 1 Pack, Style: Ball
Hello, I am Skye! I am an Australian Mountain Doodle puppy, and my humans finally found a ball that can keep up with me! The Benebone Natural Rubber Dog Ball is officially my prized possession. Why I give it five paws: The Perfect Chew: It is made of natural rubber, which means it has this amazing, springy texture that feels so good on my teeth. It's super tough, but it still has a satisfying squish when I chomp down on it. Funky Bounces: Because of the rubber and the design, it doesn't just roll in a boring straight line. When it hits the floor, it bounces all over the place in crazy directions, which makes chasing it so exciting. Easy to Carry: The texture makes it really easy for me to grab with my paws and hold onto in my mouth, even when it gets a little slobbery during a long game of fetch.

So far this is the perfect alternative to other wobble toy feeders. Please make a bigger size!
Size: 1 Pack, Style: Pawbler
Why did you pick this product vs others?: I bought the Pawbler because the two most popular wobble treat feeders on the market are plastic, and one of my dogs just absolutely destroys those in no time because he bites them and throws them rather then nudging them and then he has plastic cutting him so I am forced to throw away a costly treat toy/dispenser. I thought maybe a rubber one would work out better. So far my dogs love it, it works well spitting out their kibble, seems to be holding up and is easy to clean and feels like a good weight, not a super flimsy toy. I would love to see it made in a slightly larger size, I think this current size is good for medium dogs. It holds just under a cup of small round kibble but I would like to see one that can hold more and is slightly larger in size. I have 4 german shorthaired pointers, my test subject for this toy is mostly my 70 pounder who bites the toys instead of nudging them and throws them across the room, so it is taking a beating. I think for him a larger size would be helpful in deterring that behavior but I also think this may be too small for larger breeds. Durability: So far this toy looks just like when I bought it. It has no punctures or scratches and unscrews without problem. We have only had it a week or so but we use puzzle/toy feeders to feed our dogs lunch every day so it is pretty easy to tell which toys won't last long. Obviously, I can't speak to long-term durability at the moment, but I can say that most toys similar to this end up already scratched or punctured in a few days, so this is already sturdier when compared to what I have tried before.
